WWE WrestleMania 29 is still a little less than three months away yet a recent report indicates that the top four matches are locked in. While none are real surprises, it does support what could be one of the strongest cards in Mania history.
Dave Meltzer has the news in his latest edition of the Wrestling Observer newsletter. According to Meltzer, the top four matches of the show are set. Barring an injury or last minute change of heart, WWE fans will get one of the better WrestleMania events in recent years.
The top match as expected is scheduled to be John Cena vs. The Rock for the WWE championship. If you think about The Rock cutting his promo about the title after last year’s match, you would suspect that this had been planned for the last year. It will be interesting in seeing the difference a year’s worth of hype makes as opposed to a few months for the same match.
Meltzer does break an interesting piece of news regarding the match, or at least the plan to get there in his latest newsletter. He reports that there is some consideration to having CM Punk retain the WWE championship at the Royal Rumble and having The Rock win the title at the Elimination Chamber. My hunch is at the end of the day the WWE sticks with the original plan and has Rock taking the title home at the Rumble.
Triple H is expected to return for his annual WrestleMania appearance at 29. Hunter will rematch with former UFC champion Brock Lesnar. This was also widely expected, although some reports had the WWE on the fence about this one. I think it is somewhat of a waste of Lesnar.
